Built for service. Prepared for civilian life.

Ex-military Land Rovers offer something different from an ordinary used 4x4. Their appeal comes from the combination of simple engineering, practical design, four-wheel-drive capability and genuine military history.

When a vehicle arrives, its condition can vary according to its age, service history and previous use. The important thing is understanding what you are buying.

Our aim is to present each vehicle clearly, explain its condition and identify the work which can be carried out before sale.

01 Vehicle arrival and initial assessment
02 Mechanical inspection and repairs
03 Preparation and presentation

From military service to civilian ownership.

The following stages give prospective buyers an insight into how an ex-military Land Rover can progress from arrival to a "prepared" vehicle.

01

Arrival

Vehicles arrive direct from service in "as is" condition following release. The first step is to assess what the vehicle needs mechanically and cosmetically.

02

Inspection & Repair

Chassis, body, brakes, steering, suspension, drivetrain and other systems will be inspected and and noted for later repairs.

03

Parts Replacement

Mechanical components are assessed according to current condition. Replacement parts can then be ordered and fitted.

04

Preparation & Finish

Depending on customer preferences vehicles can be purchased "as is" or "prepared" to a level including a full external respray of the vehicle.

What should you look for in an ex-military Land Rover?

Age and military use mean that condition matters more than simply looking at the odometer which could have been changed. These are some of the areas worth discussing before you buy.

01

Chassis

Ask about corrosion, repairs, previous welding and the condition of the main chassis sections.

02

Bulkhead & Body

Check for corrosion, previous repairs, panel condition, doors, hinges and general bodywork.

03

Engine & Drivetrain

Ask about engine type, servicing, gearbox, transfer box, axles and any known mechanical issues.

04

Suspension & Steering

Find out what has been inspected, repaired or replaced and whether the vehicle has any known faults.

05

Military Equipment

Ask which military fittings remain, which have been removed and whether original equipment accompanies the vehicle.

06

Documentation

Ask what vehicle information, registration documents, service records and supporting paperwork are available.

Buying an ex-military Land Rover?

Here are some of the questions we expect prospective owners to ask. The answers can be amended for your exact sales policy and vehicle preparation process.

Yes, many ex-military Land Rovers are used by civilian owners. However, each vehicle should be considered individually. Specification, condition, modifications, road equipment and previous use can all vary, so we recommend discussing and ideally inspecting the specific vehicle before purchase.

It means the vehicle was previously operated in military service before being released into the civilian market. The exact history, military role, equipment and specification can vary between vehicles. It is possible to submit a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the Ministry of Defence which they are legally obliged to provide a response to. FOI requests but the information provided can be limited or redacted.

Military vehicles can have experienced demanding operating conditions, so usage varies considerably. Mileage alone does not provide the complete picture as speedometers may have been changed during their operational career. Condition, maintenance, previous repairs and the vehicle's individual history should all be considered.

Each vehicle is assessed to determine what reparatory works need to be carried out on a vehicle which at the basic level includes making sure that the vehicle starts, stops, runs , drives and is safe.

Customers do have the option to have the vehicle fully serviced and MOT'd and even re-sprayed.

This depends on the vehicle and the specification being offered. Some vehicles may retain an original or service finish, while others may receive bodywork, preparation or repainting as part of their preparation. The individual vehicle listing will state if the vehicle has been prepared

Absolutely in fact we recommend it. Vehicle inspections can be arranged subject to availability and location. If you are seriously considering a vehicle, contact us to discuss the vehicle, its condition and what you would like to inspect.
